The Swedish-speaking people of Finland brought to the 'new world' a rich cultural heritage. Their contributions to and assimilation into a strong American culture give them a proud heritage upon which to build.
The Swedish Finn immigrants who brought their traditional trades were known for their skill and strong work ethic. One of their earliest documented contributions was the technology of log cabin building.
Noted Swedish Finns in North America and Finland include:
- Gen C. G. E. Mannerheim -- Field Marshal for Finnish military during wars against Russia.
- John Morton -- American born legislator and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
- Dr. Anders M. Myhrman -- historian, immigrated in 1910 and wrote about Swede Finns in America.
- Johan Ludvig Runeberg -- scholar and the national poet of Finland.
- Jean Sibelius -- composer, Finlandia
- Zacharias Topelius -- Topelius was a versatile writer and a newspaperman.
- Georg Henrik von Wright -- Finnish philosopher and logician, influential cultural critic and essayist. Georg Henrik von Wright is the successor of the famous philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein at the University of Cambridge
- Edith Södergran -- Pioneer of poetry in Swedish language in Finland. Södergran's impact on the Nordic poetry, especially the Finnish modernism in the 1920s, was significant in liberating verse from the confines of rhyme, regular rhythm, and traditional imagery.
- The Moomin trolls by Tove Jansson are familiar to all of us
- Linus Torvalds -- the creator of Linux, "the Microsoft killer" is perhaps the most known living Swede-Finn abroad
- Gustaf Erikson -- In the 1920s and 1930s Gustaf Erikson was the biggest sailing-ship owner in the world.
